Make A Rustic Log Table To Use Outside

Make a rustic looking table out of a log to place outside on your deck. This table will add character to your property and can be enjoyed when you are outdoors relaxing in your favorite chair.

Use These Materials

  • wide log
  • soapy water
  • scrub brush
  • water hose
  • electric sander
  • low and fine grit sandpaper
  • exterior wood stain
  • mixing stick
  • standard paintbrush
  • rag
  • cloth
  • thin paintbrush
  • acrylic sheet
  • epoxy

Clean And Sand The Log

Purchase a log from a lumber supplier or company that supplies firewood. After you bring it home, clean it off with soapy water and a scrub brush. Rinse the soap off with a water hose. Leave the log outside and wait for it to dry. Sand the flat part of the log that you will be using as the top of the base. Having a smooth surface is important so that the tabletop rests evenly upon it when you are getting ready to attach it. Wipe away any sanding dust with a rag.

Apply Exterior Wood Stain

Apply a coat of stain to color the wood and to make it waterproof so that it isn't prone to rotting. Mix the stain to remove any air bubbles. Brush it on the sides and top of the log in straight lines. Wait the required amount of time for the product to dry. Apply an additional coat to deepen the color and add additional protection. Any crevices in the wood that are not coated well with a standard paintbrush can be filled in with a thin one.

Attach The Top

An acrylic sheet will make a great top for your table. This material is lightweight, durable, and easy to clean. Apply epoxy to the top of the base with a paintbrush. Press the acrylic sheet firmly onto it. Epoxy will take several hours to bond, so placing a weighted object on the top of the acrylic sheet will help the two pieces bond together. To prevent scratches on the surface of the table, place a cloth before adding the weighted object. After several hours, your table will be ready for use.

Enjoy Your Table

The project you made will make the perfect side table for you to place items on while relaxing outdoors. Keep it clean with soapy water and a rag. You will be able to appreciate using it throughout the year and the fact that it didn't cost you much time or money to complete.
